Nine Carols for Male Voices
Vaughan Williams est âgé de quarante et un ans quand débute la Grande Guerre. Bien qu’il ait la possibilité d’échapper à tout service militaire ou de servir comme gradé, il choisit de s’enrôler comme simple soldat dans le Royal Army Medical Corps. Éreinté par son rôle de brancardier en France et à Salonique, il est finalement élevé au grade de sous-lieutenant dans la Royal Garrison Artillery le 24 décembre 1917. Une anecdote rapporte qu’à une occasion, bien que trop malade pour ne serait-ce que rester debout, il a continué à diriger sa batterie d’artillerie allongé à même l
Ce qui ne l'empêche pas de reprendre des carols traditionnels et de les harmoniser pour un choeur d'hommes (TTBB). Ce recueil en comprend neuf :
